America has a 150-year legacy of shoemaking innovation. Different boots for each foot. Multiple widths. Comfortable, purpose-built soles. For most of that history, the U.S. led the world in footwear manufacturing — not just in volume, but in craftsmanship and technical advancement.

Then, roughly 30 years ago, the industry shifted. One by one, major brands moved production overseas, redirecting their attention to marketing, logistics, and distribution. The factories closed. The skilled workers dispersed. The knowledge walked out the door.

Liberty Footwear never followed.

One of Only a Handful Left

Today, Liberty Footwear is one of only a handful of American shoe factories still building boots and shoes domestically — right here in Grand Rapids, Michigan. That's not a marketing claim. It's the reality of what this industry has become, and what we've chosen to remain.

Staying domestic wasn't the easy path. But it's the right one — and not just for sentimental reasons.

The Real Advantages of Building Here

Flexibility and speed. When a customer needs a specific style in a specific color, we can produce it. We're not waiting on a 90-day container shipment or managing a minimum order quantity with an overseas factory. We make decisions and act on them quickly.

Lower inventory capital. Because we manufacture on demand rather than forecasting six months out, we're not sitting on warehouses full of styles that may or may not sell. That efficiency passes through to the customer.

Direct responsiveness. When a customer tells us something isn't working — a fit issue, a durability concern, a request for a new color — we can address it in the next production run. That feedback loop is essentially impossible when your factory is on the other side of the world.

Intellectual property protection. Domestic manufacturing means our designs, materials, and construction techniques stay with us. Overseas production has cost American companies far more than shipping savings over the years.

Competitive component pricing. Contrary to what most people assume, we source many of our components at pricing comparable to what Asian factories pay. The cost gap between domestic and overseas manufacturing is far smaller than the industry narrative suggests — particularly at our scale.

Affordability through family ownership. We don't have shareholders to satisfy or executives to compensate at a remove from the product. The family owns it, runs it, and works in it. That keeps costs lean and quality high.

The Larger Picture

The broader footwear industry is starting to notice. Major athletic brands have launched domestic pilot programs, experimenting with small-scale U.S. production in hopes of reviving consumer interest in American-made products — and potentially reopening the component supplier infrastructure that closed when the factories left.

It's a promising sign. But for Liberty Footwear, it was never a trend to follow. It was always the only way we knew how to operate.
